Book Review - A Discovery of Witches

I just finished reading A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness. This book is the first of a trilogy - so there is a cliff hanger at the end. It is a modern day tale of a woman, Diana Bishop, who is a "witch" by birth but refuses to use her magic. In this world, humans do not know of the existence of vampires, daemons, and witches. Diana is a historian researching alchemy as the basis of modern science. While doing research at Oxford's Bodliean Library, she calls forth a book, Ashmole 782, that has been missing for centuries. It seems that the Witches and Vampires want it also, thinking it is the answer to all their questions of origin, power and future. So begins the events that happen to bring Diana under the control of the different factions. In walks, Matthew Clairmont, vampire hotness extraordinaire....

The tale weaves in historical facts and people, while telling an exciting story of danger and some romance. It is not your typical vampire story, and has unique twists to it. The only thing I was a little dissapointed in was the romance...well not the romance, that is pretty good. But they are adults and if they are as much in love as the story tells, then I would find it hard to believe that they abstain from sex, in their situation. (Can't say more or it would be a spoiler!) But maybe the will of a vampire and historian is better than mine would be! LOL Anyway, the story ends on a big cliff-hanger, setting up for the next book, Shadow of Night, which will be released July 10, 2012. Can't wait to get my hands on it!

Think I will get the audiobook and listen to it while I wait for Shadow of Night! Highly recommend this book!

Wow It's been a Year....

Like the title says, it's been a long time since I posted. Been very busy or is it lazy? Since my last post, I've done some traveling out of the country to Ireland and Scotland, traveling in the country : Orlando, Tampa, Sarasota, Atlanta, St Augustine Beach. I've been busy with some photography, and recently bought a new Nikon DSLR camera! I've changed jobs - same company, just different job. I've had a boyfriend, then got rid of the same boyfriend. I've had to have epidural injections for some bulging disks in my neck. Wow, no wonder I've been too busy to blog!

Well that means I have lots to catch up on, share stores, pictures, thoughts and ideas! So let me get busy and get something interesting on here! I'll leave you with a few pictures from some of my travels to get it started!

Dating with Technology...

So what to do to meet men today? Well if you have nice friends that have single male friends, that would work, or you join some organization / sport / hobby to meet men, or you go to bars, or you join internet dating sites. My friends didn’t seem to have any single male friends that they thought I would be interested in. I volunteered with a political group, they were all old or weird men. I started walking after work in the downtown area, but I only saw an occasional man as he was jogging past me. I joined a free internet dating site that a co-worker told me about. So far my only responses were 27 year old boys and fat guys.

Not having much luck with all of the above, I am off to a wedding in the mountains that had a whole weekend of events planned. The bride has planned a fantastic four day wedding event. It is a great time and there are lots of single men there, most are friends of the groom, that I had not met before. The only problem is that they are all about 15 to 20 years younger! Thank goodness I don’t look my age, or so I’ve been told! After three days of parties, whitewater rafting, eating, drinking, we are all friends! Enter one funny, cute guest of the groom, let’s call him Ian. We laugh and joke with each other, and he actually offers me his room key at the wedding reception after party! I laughed and danced away, he did apologize later! The next day we are all traveling back to Atlanta and end up following each other. Next thing I know we are stopping to have lunch together. During lunch we exchange phone numbers so we can play “scrabble” on our iphones. Let the real games begin!

Scrabble led to text messages. Text messages became very flirty. Did you know you can send pictures with text messages? Yes you can! Pardon me while I blush! I actually had to up my text allowance on my cell phone, because we quickly exceeded my allowed text quota. Next Ian is inviting me back to Atlanta.

In the meantime, my little experiment on the internet dating site starts paying off and I actually get men over the age of 27 messaging me! One in particular, let’s call him Bill, sends a great opener message about Trueblood that catches my attention. So we are messaging back and forth. He is witty and interesting. I agree to meet him at the beach for an Art Walk on a week night. He was nice and I liked him.

So now I have gone from no dating to dating / texting two men. Hummmm. Now my texting with Ian, from Atlanta is more sexual innuendo and my texting with Bill, is nice dating text. I’m having fun. Now comes the difficulty with texting two guys at once. My car is broken into at my home. Both are texting me about how I am doing and am I safe. I assure both I am fine. I get late night texts from Ian that are pretty hot. The next morning I get a text message that asks, “Any criminal activity last night?” Without looking at the sending number too much, I quickly respond, “The only criminal activity is you not in my bed. LOL And the hoot owl that kept me up all night.” After about ten minutes and no response, I look at my messages and about faint. I sent that to the nice guy, Bill, not bad-boy Ian that I had been having sexting messages with. Oops. What to do? I quickly text Bill back, “Oops. That was a line from a movie that I thought was funny, but now I see it, it is not…embarrassed.” Does he buy it? Yes he does! LOL

Fast forward two weeks later, I am in Atlanta staying with my friend. I had been to a party the night before and Ian is there. We have a great time. I also meet another guy that has some great tattoos that he shows me. He gets my phone number so he can send me a picture. I get home from the party, and go back out with Ian. About ten o’clock am, I get a text message, “How you feeling this morning?” I respond, “I can’t believe I left here last night in my PJ’s. Thanks for last nite.” A few minutes later I get a message, “Sorry babe you got me confused with someone else, this is Sean the guy with the tats.” My response, “Oops.” I mean what else can you say?

Lesson learned, make sure you know who you are texting, especially if you are seeing more than one person at a time!

Wedding Fun In Tennessee

Just got back from a weekend wedding up in Tennessee! It was so great to see so many friends that I hadn't seen in a while and to make some new ones! What an adventure! Hats off to Teri, the Bride! What an awesome job making it an event to remember! First the location was in eastern Tennesse in the Smokey Moutains. Guests stayed in Log Cabins & Lodges in a very picturesque location Telliquah Falls, Tennessee! Guests arrived from three countries (US, Canada and South Africa) and 15 states!

Friday night started out with the Bachelorette and Bachelor parties...not together of course! The ladies piled seventeen women in a fifteen passenger van and traveled to Knoxville for dinner and a show. A Drag Queen Show that is! Even the Bride's Grandmother had a great time, or least she saw things she had never seen before! The highlight of the show was a Marilyn Manson looking guy that wore nothing but duct tape in strategic locations! LOL! He was very white, very skinny, and very agile!

Saturday started with some white water rafting on the Ocoee River with about 40 of our closest friends! What a blast! Wasn't too convinced that it was smart to do this in October cause I am a "warm water" kinda girl! Give me the Gulf Stream anytime over cold water! LOL It was an awesome day, and nobody got dumped overboard! The Bride and the Groom both survived with no black eyes or missing teeth from wayward paddles!

After the wedding rehearsal on Saturday evening, a barbeque and games were enjoyed by all. The food was fantastic, ribs that fell off the bone and needed no sauce! The highlight of the games were the blow up sumo wrestler suits! Everyone had a turn and it was so funny seeing everyone bounce around and when they fell....well it was like turtles on their backs! Hilarlious! Fireworks went off all night and some awesome music by the DJ kept things moving.

Fun continued in the Bridesmaid's cabin where jello shots got everyone in a very happy mood! Games of Twister were enjoyed by the ladies -especially when it was "man-twister"! Some fantasies may have been realized watching that game! LOL Things also heated up in the hot-tub on the deck, enjoying the cool night air and beautiful night sky! So many shooting stars out that night!

On Sunday, guests enjoyed a slow morning getting ready for the afternoon wedding! The weather was awesome, a perfect day for the bride. At 4 pm the guests are all in place, the Groom, Best Man and Chaplain move to the front of the cabin where the ceremony will be. The Bridesmaids are escorted down the aisle by the Groomsmen. Then the music stops and everything is quiet, where is the Bride? In the distance you hear a motorcycle start up! Here comes the Bride on the back of a motorcycle across from the other cabin, with her white dress and veil streaming in the wind! She arrives and gets off the bike and is escorted by her two brothers to her awaiting Groom! The ceremony was to the point, short and sweet!

The reception was under a tent, with a wonderful buffet dinner and champagne toasts! Once dinner was finished the DJ kicked in some dancing music and the party began! Again, big fireworks lite up the night! What an awesome celebration for two wonderful friends!

After the Bride and Groom escaped to their cabin, we again moved to the Bridesmaid's cabin and the party proceeded on! Dancing and partying continued till very early in the morning!

Monday morning arrrived way too early for most of us, but flights had to be made! After a quick breakfast and lots of hugs and promises to keep in touch, everyone went on their way. Promises to all meet in Utah in Febraury for a snowboarding reunion of the party were made, and as is usual to most weddings, some new relationships may have been started! Hope they all end up as happy as Teri & Matt!
